The city of San Gimignano, declared World Heritage by UNESCO , is situated on a hill overlooking the Elsa Valley at 330 metres above see level at just 56 km from Florence.
The city was founded on the site of a small Etruscan village named “Silva”, its more recent history began in the 10th century a.d. taking its name fro the Bishop Saint of Modena San Gimignano who, although having lived five centuries earlier, when invoked in prayer by its inhabitants is reputed to have saved the city from the barbaric hordes, appearing miraculously on the city walls.
In Mediaeval times, thanks to its position on the “Via Francigena”, the route taken above all by the pilgrims from France travelling towards. Rome, the city enjoyed a splendid rebirth o works of art decorating churches, convents and stately abodes, many of which still surviving.
